THE MIDSUMMER STATION

THE MIDSUMMER STATION

The Midsummer Station is the much-anticipated fifth studio album of Owl City, otherwise known as Adam Young, an American electro artist. Personally, I have been a fan of Owl City and his work since he started making music in 2007, so I was very excited to get to review this album.

The first thing I noticed upon hearing the album was that Adam was experimenting with various new sounds. The influence he received from working with other artists is noticeable, but everything still manages to sound unique and new. Like his early work, a lot of the music on this album is extremely upbeat with delightfully encouraging lyrics.

Owl City worked with several other artists in making this album. Track 4, “Dementia,” features Mark Hoppus of Blink 182. It was definitely different from the other songs on the album, with a wonderful pop-rock vibe to it. It fit in perfectly with the almost risky lyrics of track 5, “I’m Coming After You.” Adam manages to stay wholesome and still cleverly phrase things.

Track 7, “Good Time,” is the highlight of the album. It’s a very upbeat song featuring Carly Rae Jepsen. I personally don’t like it as much as some others did, but I must admit that it’s a very catchy song.

My personal favorite was track 9, “Silhouette.” It was probably the calmest song on the album, featuring mostly a lone piano and vocals. It caught me off guard, with its deep message of letting go of the past, no matter how hard things may be.

Owl City makes music to spread a positive, wholesome message and he succeeds every time.

I think that this album is for everyone, even those who aren't long time fans of Owl City and those who don’t usually listen to this kind of music.  Adam Young will not disappoint you.
